SAG Awards 2011 Fashion; Best & Worst Dressed On The Red Carpet
Hot on the heels of the Golden Globes came the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, and despite the cloudy weather in LA, the dresses were dazzling! In fact there were so many gorgeous dresses we found it hard to pick our faves!
The Best Dressed At The SAG Awards
Nudes, blush & pastels really dominated the red carpet and once again prove these romantic palettes are going to be huge for Spring/Summer.
Hilary Swank wowed in an asymmetric Versace number. We love how she’s complimented the dress with loose curls and simple accessories. She looks really confident and relaxed and certainly gives the younger stars a run for their money.
‘Glee’ actress Lea Michele also opted for nude, but added a bit of sparkle to the red carpet in this fabulous embellished Oscar de la Renta gown. The low-neck and hip-hugging cut, prevent the dress from looking anything but simple and we love the Tiffany & Co jewels!
We also adored Angie Harmon’s soft pastel pink Monique Lhuillier dress. This is definitely one of those love it or hate it dresses, but we think the feather skirt and jewelled bodice make her look like a fairytale princess, and we love how she took a gamble on the red carpet rather than playing it safe.
Best actress winner Natalie Portman showed off her baby bump in this soft white gown by Azarro. Whilst the dress was relatively simple she trumped all the other celebs on the accessories front, by draping herself in two million dollars worth of jewellery. Yowzas!
Some stars shunned the soft palettes seen above and really made a statement by adding a bold splash of colour to the red carpet. Instead of the green shades that dominated the Golden Globe Awards however, it was blue and red hues that worked as the stand-out colours for the evening.
Mila Kunis led the way in her Alexander McQueen dress which was by far our favourite dress of the night. The strapless dress was so bold and effused with colour that it even stood out from the red carpet she was standing on. We adore the sweetheart shape of the neckline and the long floaty chiffon fabric. The cinched-in waist is also perfect for her tiny frame and just goes to show petite girls can pull off maxi dresses just as well as tall girls!
Our other favourite dress that added some much needed colour to the event was Sofia Vergara’s cobalt blue wrap-waisted Roberto Cavalli gown. It looks like she’s been poured into the dress and shows off her enviable curves beautifully. She may have lost out to Betty White for her ‘Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor’ but we reckon those boobs should win an award of their own!
The Worst Dressed At The SAG Awards
There weren’t many really awful outfits but we thought a few celebs could have looked better….
Nicole Kidman’s Nina Ricci dress looked way too regal for a red carpet event, and there was a distracting amount of lace and frill going on. Nicole’s style is usually flawless but this just didn’t do a lot for her pale, willowy figure.
Christina Hendricks also failed to impress in this gothic L’Wren Scott dress. It looks more like a dressing gown than a red carpet frock, and she really loses her va-va-voom in it. The severe eye make-up doesn’t help the witchy look either.
We also thought Jennifer Lawrence’s Oscar de la Renta gown was way too bright. The black belt looks too harsh with the hot pink and the black shoes clash horribly as well. There’s just too much going on with the shoulder straps and bow. If the dress had been accessorized differently and without the black this could have looked a lot nicer.
Our least favourite look of the evening came from Winona Ryder in her frothy strapless Alberta Ferretti gown. She doesn’t exactly seem to exude confidence in this get-up & looks like a scared & confused gothic bride. Oh & the 1990’s prom committee want their dress back as well…….

Golden Globes 2011 Fashion & Gossip
Our favourite celebs were out in full force on Sunday night to celebrate the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, and for anybody that watched it you’ll know the winners and losers were overshadowed by the controversial presenting of Ricky Gervais who hasn’t been out of the news ever since. We sat and watched it just to check out our favourite dresses from the evening but ended up watching the whole thing just to see who Gervais would make fun of next. Aside from the fabulous fashion, at least he injected a bit of spark into what tends to be a pompous awards ceremony even if some of the jokes were a little insulting.
Our favourite moment was when he introduced Bruce Willis as Ashton Kutcher’s dad. Genius!
Top Trends & Best Dressed
This year’s ceremony proved that old school Hollywood glamour is well and truly back in style. Most of the stars opted for full length and fabulous gowns, with fishtails and trains proving much more popular than the shorter numbers.
If there was one standout trend from the 2011 Golden Globes red carpet though, it was the A-list penchant for stunning emerald green gowns. From Catherine Zeta-Jones’ voluminous Monique Lhuillier frock, to Mila Kunis’ one-shoulder Vera Wang design and Angelina Jolie’s amazing Atelier Versace creation, the jewel tone was the shade to be seen in. We think they all look amazing, and are so glad Mila opted for this glamorous number after her dowdy People’s Choice Awards frock!
Another popular colour of the evening was red- with Mad Men’s January Jones leading the way in her scarlet Versace number. The dress is very revealing and has been criticised by many fashion observers, but we think she looks gorgeous, and there aren’t many people who could pull off this daring creation! Her co-star Christina Hendricks also had heads turning in her Romona Keveza dress which showed off her beautifully curvy figure, while Malin Akerman followed suit in scarlet Tommy Hilfiger.
There were lashings of top-to-toe sparkle this year and leading the way (literally- she was the first to arrive) with the full-on embellishment was Olivia Wilde in our favourite dress of the night. The gold Marchesa ballgown is stunning and so glamorous and looks utterly fabulous with her glittering Louboutin shoes. If we had a red carpet event to go to we’d dress like a princess as well!
Anne Hathaway continued the sparkly trend in her spangled bronze Armani Couture gown. We love the fact it’s modern and demure with long sleeves and a high neck but still has that movie star magic when she turns around to reveal a daring backless style.

Our other favourite dresses included Halle Berry’s and Eva Longoria’s, who proved the time-honoured long black dress is a style staple that will forever prove popular.
Eva’s Zac Posen fishtail number oozes old-style Hollywood glamour and gives her a gorgeous hourglass silhouette, whilst Halle’s Nina Ricci satin corset dress show’s off her to-die-for figure. The full impact of this dress was fully captured when she walked on stage to present an award and had the chiffon billowing behind her like a goddess.

Sack the stylist!
Tilda Swinton’s gold Jil Sander skirt and blouse were shapeless and dowdy and really did nothing for her. We do wish she’d wear a bit more make-up as well….
Michelle Williams gets hippy chic … minus the chic. The ‘Blue Valentine’ star’s flower power Valentino number, blooming with daisies on the neutral nude fabric, is a little too garden party and not enough Golden Globes. The neckline is a little too mumsy, and the cut is all wrong. She looks as unimpressed with her choice of outfit as we are…
Jennifer Love-Hewitt made a really bad fashion choice with her shapeless Romona Keveza number. The dress looked more bridal than Golden Globes, and the pleated bust and draped skirt did little for her curvy figure. Her glamorous updo is completely lost in this visual assault as well.
The lovely Natalie Portman should have been the belle of the ball with her nominated ‘Black Swan’ performance, her engagement, and a baby on the way but this Viktor & Rolf pink satin dress — complete with a hideous sequined rose — is uninspired at best.
One of our biggest disappointments of the night was Sandra Bullock’s look. Her pale pink Jenny Packham gown is lacking in structure and sex appeal whilst her new fringe is too heavy and unflattering. She looked thoroughly miserable both on the red carpet and on stage as well.
Julianne Moore’s hot pink Lanvin gown swamps her figure with its shapeless, strangely asymmetrical style. We love the bold colour as bright hues are bang on trend, but the pink really clashes with her red hair, and the dress is badly wrinkled.
And finally…. Helena Bonham Carter… (Best? Worst? Or just bonkers?)
We couldn’t leave Helena out of our blog post! You can always rely on the actress to wear the most bizarre outfits on the red carpet, and her Vivienne Westwood dress and mismatched red & green shoes certainly made her stand out. She may not have been the most fashion-forward but she sure looked like she was having fun! We love the mad professor hairstyle and sunglasses too! If Helena ever stepped out in something less than bonkers we’d be disappointed….
