Maxi Dresses Trend Summer 2011
Women’s Maxi Dresses 2011- Hot Trend!
Women everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief this summer because the maxi dress has once again become this season’s hottest trend! Hooray! The fabulously flattering dress featured heavily in just about every catwalk show for spring/summer 2011 and so inevitably the high street has followed suit.
As it’s now the beginning of April where the nights are lighter, and we’re FINALLY getting some decent weather, now is the perfect time to start thinking about that summer wardrobe- especially if you’re lucky enough to have a holiday to look forward to.
Over the last few years the maxi dress has become a wardrobe staple for most of us. The long romantic length is flattering and feminine, and because it’s suitable for all ages, and comes in so many shapes and styles it’s easy to find one that fits perfectly. It really is the trend that keeps on giving!
Maxi dresses are perfect for special occasions such as weddings & proms (just team with some killer heels and a cute clutch and you’ll look impossibly sophisticated) and they also look fabulous when worn casually. They can be great teamed with flip-flops as a beach cover-up, and they’re also perfect for giving you that ‘I haven’t tried too hard’ look (even though you’ll still look super glam).
The best thing about maxi dresses is that they hide all your lumps and bumps (wear one to dinner and pasta is no longer the enemy!) and they also hide untanned legs- in fact you don’t even have to bother shaving! What’s not to love about this dress?
Here at Pinksquid Clothing we simply adore this trend especially as Spring/Summer 2011 brings a whole array of exciting new styles, shapes and colours. Check out some of the fabulously colourful prints we have in stock as well as the more sedate nudes and pastels.
Valentine’s Dresses
Valentines day is the perfect excuse for getting dressed up whether you love it or hate it!
Roses are red, violets are blue…..
Ah Valentines day! Yes ladies, love it or hate it, it’s just around the corner. And whether you’re a hopeless romantic who thrills to the notion of a dozen red roses, or a downhearted cynic who would rather throw heart shaped sweets at loved-up couples, there’s really not going to be any hiding from it. So we say you should embrace it! Give Valentines day a cuddle! Even if you’re just going out with the girls to celebrate singledom it’s the perfect excuse to go shopping- and who doesn’t love that!?
For the ladies who have someone special to impress you’ll be looking to find that perfect outfit that will make your date the happiest man alive. Luckily with the miracle of the internet we don’t have to spend hours traipsing up and down the high street whilst fending off overzealous shop assistants anymore, so finding the perfect dress is only a cup of tea and a few clicks away. Always remember though that regardless of whether you favour a provocative little black dress or lean more towards a demure and innocent white number, the key is all about combining taste, style and comfort. On this sexy day you want to look your best- but your best doesn’t have to mean expensive or over (or under!) dressed.
The high street has really fallen for dreamy pinks and nude tones this season so if you want to go for something feminine that will still see you through to Spring & Summer in style, then now is the time to invest!
If you’re amidst the ranks of Valentine’s haters and scoff at the thought of this Hallmark of holidays, then why not indulge in a spot of retail therapy. Whoever said shopping is a poor substitute for love clearly didn’t know the power of a great outfit. Flowers will die, and chocolates will be eaten, but a cute party dress is forever. Once you’ve got that new dress you can get dolled up and hit the town with your girls or stay at home for a glamorous movie & ice cream marathon. Just stay away from the romantic comedies!

Christmas Party Dresses- (Part 2!)
Picking That Perfect Dress!
Christmas party dresses always come in luxurious fabrics and rich colours that you often can’t get away with at other times of the year so continuing with our Christmas Party Dresses blog (see below) help and tips, we decided to dedicate a whole post on choosing the type of dress according to the material & shade!
Velvet
For 2010 velvet has made a comeback especially after Emma Watson rocked up to a glitzy event at Claridges this month with her Harry Potter co-stars wearing a beautiful Vionnet dress.
This can be a tricky fabric to wear but if you match it with lace or chiffon it can have a luxuriously rich look.
If you can’t afford to spend too much then stick to darker shades as they look more expensive and keep your make-up fresh when wearing velvet as dark tones on both your lips and eyes could end up giving you the 90’s velvet look and not the 2010 one!
Don’t overdo it- wear just one velvet piece, and never ever wear a velvet dress with a velvet jacket as it’s way too panto!
Satin
Satin is always a popular choice for Christmas, because it makes you feel instantly dressed up, sexy & feminine. The good thing about satin is it can also be worn easily throughout the rest of the year so it’s a good fabric to go for if you want to buy something that will work next season as well.
Satin drapes beautifully over the skin, but it can also cling awkwardly over bulges (no matter how small!) so do make sure you get a really good fitting dress if choosing satin. It’s often worth investing in seamless underwear and if you have lumps and bumps you want to cover invest in some great shapewear to add smoothness. It’s always a good idea to go for something that has some added stretch to it, and a cotton-mix sateen fabric is always flattering especially if it is lined.
Like with velvet don’t overdo it- stick to one or two satin pieces at a time and keep accessories to a minimum- it’s a beautiful & luxurious fabric & the fabric is enough to do the talking!
Embellished
Us girls do love a bit of sparkle at Christmas, and jewelled or sequin dresses are great way to still be able to wear a safe colour (Like black!) without looking boring. It also means you can keep jewellery to a minimum so can end up more cost-effective!
Keep the look classy and and don’t overdo it with the sparkles- you don’t want to look like you’re auditioning for strictly come dancing! If you’re curvy do only wear the embellishment in one area as all-over glitz will make you look bigger than you are.
Finally, check the quality before you buy and look for secure stitching. Leaving a trail of beads in your wake is no way to make a lasting impression!
Colour Block
Wearing just one block colour is really in style right now, and as ever the shops are full or lots of reds & purples this Christmas. For us at Pinksquid Clothing, the most interesting colour of the season has been magenta pink. It’s a great stand out colour that suits most skin tones, and will ensure you’ll look a little bit different from the rest of the ladies at the party.
If you’re going to go for one colour all over. Do make sure the colour flatters your skin tone, and if you do opt for red, don’t overdo it with the fake tan- red looks so much more striking on natural skin tones. You can really create impact with red as well by matching your lipstick to it and keeping your eye make-up to a minimum.
If you really want the colour of your outfit to make an impact you could also wear a contrasting coloured belt to show off your waist!
Printed Dresses
Printed dresses have been on trend all year, but now that the extravagent Christmas party season is here it means we can wear louder and prouder prints or unleash our inner Bet Lynch with leopard print and still look like babes!
Get set to pounce in leopard print with this beautiful chiffon number;
If you want to wear prints and still look streamlined, remember that big bold patterns are more slimming than small, and vertical prints will elongate your shape.
Get accessories in muted coloured tones, and match your tights with a colour in your dress for a polished, complete look.

The Holidays Are Coming…
We know it’s still only November but as we saw the Coca-Cola advert on TV today we have decided Christmas must officially be here.
That means us girls now have the perfect excuse to go shopping for Christmas party dresses! Hooray!
We know there are always a million and one things to do in the run up to Christmas, but for now lets forget about the food, decorations and what socks you’re going to buy dad for Christmas and have a little think about what fabulous look we want to go with this year…..
Picking That Perfect Dress- (Part 1!)
Ok, so sometimes it might seem like there’s an overwhelming choice of dresses on the high street, and unless you’re a true shopaholic, it can actually seem a little daunting. But by putting just a little thought into the outfit, you can make the decision so much easier- and when you find that perfect Christmas dress you’ll feel that extra bit special over the holiday season. You’ll walk into that party with increased confidence and a big smile on your face, and instead of worrying about how you look you’ll only have to worry about how many more times you’ll have to listen to The Pogues arguing again that night!
A good starting point is to think of the occasion (and who’s going to be there of course!) and decide whether a long or short dress would be best suited.
Always take into account your size & shape. If you’re shopping for plus sizes there’s a brilliant range of dresses to choose from nowadays. Empire-waisted dresses always create a flattering silhouette and this classic shape can be easily worn no matter what your age. Larger ladies also look fabulous in A-Line skirts & can usually pull off chunky fashion jewellery better, which can sometimes drown slimmer women. This is especially good at Christmas as there are so many gorgeous jewelled accessories to choose from and if you prefer plain coloured dresses or black (as it’s obviously the colour that knocks a dress size off of us) you can use the jewellery to glam things up a bit.
If you’re a slimmer lady, then bodycon styles will show off your slender frame whilst ruffles & horizontal stripes will make you appear curvier if you want to add a little extra shape in places.
If you’re looking for something with a bit more cleavage there are lots of dresses with padding in the bust (even a lot of the strapless styles) so you don’t have to wear a padded bra or worry about a stray chicken fillet popping out on the dancefloor.

Bodycon Dresses Look Great On Slimmer Figures, Whilst Ruffles Add Shape...
Most importantly whatever size you are make sure the dress you buy fits really well. Don’t try squeezing into anything too tight because you’ll only end up feeling uncomfortable and looking bigger than you actually are (bulging seams are not a good look) and likewise wearing something too big will just make you look sloppy.
The best way to find the perfect fit isn’t always to go by size, but to go by the measurements as well- particularly if you’re shopping online. Likewise, if you’re buying at the shops, make sure you try it on first. As most of us know UK sizing is so different from one shop to another and half the time your dress size is a state of mind.
It’s always essential to show off your best features in your party dress. If you have fabulous pins go ahead and show them off but do remember not to show off too much cleavage as well. You also don’t want to pick something so short you’re pulling it down half the night; being confident in your dress is the key to really working it at the Christmas party this year!
The Feather Dress – Work the Trend
We’re loving the current feather trend here at Pinksquid Clothing!
With the party season looming upon us, the high street shops have taken cue from the catwalks & have become stocked full of feathery pieces!
This is a trend that’s also going to be hot for Spring/Summer 2011; Alexander McQueen, Christian Cota, Giambattista Valli & Zac Posen all showcased feathers in their collections at the S/S 2011 shows, so investing in something feathery now could be a worthy investment.
Zac Posen
Alexander McQueen
If you’re not really into sequins or fur, feathers are also a chic & pretty alternative for getting noticed this christmas. The range of varieties also means you don’t have to work the feather trend full on. Feathers are appearing on earrings and necklaces, clutch bags, hair pieces and even shoes (for those who want to put their feather fashion foot forward!).
If you love hollywood glamour & really want to work the trend du jour, a feather boa is always a simple but fabulous way to dress up an outfit at christmas!
Of course, it doesn’t just have to be the fluffy feather look either- you could also choose to wear silk, organza or chiffon feathers, or for the more conservative fashionista, feather prints are totally hot right now as well.
From provocative sexy to elegant and refined, the new feathery designs can suit different occasions from casual to formal to partywear. Most importantly, choose the feather outfit that suits your personality and body type perfectly!
Check out our Chiffon Feather Dress which is perfect for the up and coming party season. It’s nude shade is also bang on trend, and perfect for taking you into spring/summer in style!

Below are our favourite feather picks as seen in celebville!
Sarah Michelle working it on the red carpet in a black knee-length feather skirt.
Lily Cole in a sexy corset style feather top.
Jessica Alba wearing feathers in her hair with a casual ensemble.
Dita Von Teese showing how the feather look can be done in a subtle and understated way.
Blake Lively showing off her fabulous pins in a short black feather skirt.
Mischa Barton combining the lace trend with feathers for maximum impact.
Ladies Black Biker Jackets
One of this season’s must-have’s has got to be the biker jacket! Although it seems to dip in and out of fashion frequently, this trend is absolutely huge right now, and celebrities everywhere seem to be channelling the look… meaning it’s likely to be here to stay for some time.
No longer just for bikers, the jacket now comes in a huge range of styles and colours, and you don’t need heavy duty leather to nail the look either. Just check out the high street and you’ll find some fabulous styles in PVC and faux leather, meaning you can commit to the look without having to spend a fortune.

Vogue named Blake Lively (above) as one of their best dressed last week when she rocked up to the Vertu Smartphone Launch Party wearing a cute Christian Dior pink ruffled dress with black opaque tights and black leather biker jacket. We think she looked stunning, and we love how the feminine dress is toughened up with the jacket and tights. It’s a great look for Autumn/Winter, and means you can still get some use out of your girly summer dresses whilst still staying on trend and warm enough for winter.
We’ve picked our favourite biker looks seen recently in Celebville;
Ashlee Simpson (above) keeping it simple wearing her biker jacket with jeans. Let’s face it, she’s always going to look stunning in whatever she wears, but she shows how easy it is to glam up a casual look with heels and a clutch. A great day-to-night look!
Jessica Alba (above) shows the versatility of the biker jacket with her sequinned dress and heels at the 2010 Fashion’s Night Out at the Ralph Lauren Soho store in New York . This look screams glamour without looking too ‘done’.
Nicola Roberts Toughens up her girly dress with a black biker jacket. The zips and studs give it a real rock-chick look!
Agyness Deyn (above) shows us how to keep it simple with a t-shirt and skinny jeans. This is a great casual look, and you can easily switch the t-shirt for a jumper for the colder months. The ankle boots pull the whole look together.
Keep your maxi skirts and dresses up to date like Olivia Palermo (above) by teaming with a black biker jacket.
